Święto to ustanowione zostało przez Zgromadzenie Ogólne ONZ w celu podnoszenia świadomości ludzi na temat znaczenia lasów dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania planety. W tym dniu na całym świecie organizowane są akcje mające zwrócić uwagę na lasy i ich problemy. Zachęca się ludzi do sadzenia drzew, sprzątania lasów i do przebywania w nich.
